Woman killed, 14 injured in Basra traffic accident

BASRA – A severe traffic accident involving a tuk-tuk and two other vehicles resulted in the death of a woman and injuries to 14 others at an intersection connecting the Safwan and Zubair areas in Basra governorate on Wednesday.

“Ambulances promptly transported the injured to Zubair Hospital, while the deceased woman’s body was taken to the forensic department,” a security source informed 964media.

Tuk-tuks are becoming a significant mode of transportation in Iraq’s urban areas, highlighting larger issues in transportation, economic stability, and safety.

The accident underscores the issue of traffic fatalities across Iraq. The Ministry of Planning reported over 3,262 traffic fatalities in 2023, nearly identical to the previous year’s figures. with 3,262 fatal accidents out of a total of 11,552, marking a slight increase of 0.3 percent from 2022.

Collisions were the most common type of accident, accounting for 56.4% of cases, followed by pedestrian-related incidents, rollovers, and other types of accidents. Driver error, including speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving, was identified as the cause of 79% of the accidents. Other contributing factors included vehicle issues, road conditions, and pedestrian and passenger behavior.

Despite the high rate of accidents attributed to driver negligence, Iraq’s infrastructure issues, stemming from conflict, neglect, and corruption, have left many roads and bridges in poor condition, further exacerbating the problem.
