Najaf residents plead for action as stagnant water poses health risks

NAJAF — Residents of the Al-Quds II neighborhood in southern Najaf are grappling with a severe public health issue as stagnant water pools at the only entrance to their community, emanating a strong, unpleasant odor. This area, also known as the Imam Al-Jawad neighborhood, has prompted urgent calls for intervention to the Najaf Water Directorate.

Upon investigation, the directorate discovered a break in a sewer pipe but declared the issue outside its scope of responsibility, redirecting concerns to the Sewerage Directorate.

“The stagnant water has been here for five days, and the smell makes it clear it’s not from a clean water pipe,” Aqeel Al-Fatlawi, a local resident, told 964media. “We’re concerned about the health impacts on residents, especially children. How has this problem has persisted for so long without resolution?”

Following inquiries from 964media, the Najaf Water Directorate sent teams to inspect the site. “Our initial inspection confirmed the problem does not fall under our jurisdiction but rather that of the Sewerage Directorate, due to the break in one of the main sewer pipes,” a media office official from the directorate stated.

Attempts by 964media to reach the Najaf Sewerage Directorate for comment were unsuccessful.

Eman Al-Saadi, head of the Services Committee in the Najaf Provincial Council, emphasized the need for formal processes. “We respond to complaints through formal requests. I’m waiting for written requests from the residents to act on this matter,” Al-Saadi explained. “We’ve faced numerous challenges in responding to direct citizen appeals and will coordinate with the Sewerage Directorate. Meanwhile, the debris issue falls under the Municipality Committee’s jurisdiction.”
