Body of second Dohuk flood victim found

DUHOK — After 17 days of search efforts, the civil defense team in Dohuk discovered the body of the second young victim missing during the city’s recent devastating flood. The discovery was made Sunday noon within the orchards of the Shindokha neighborhood in Dohuk. Bewar Abdulaziz, spokesperson for Dohuk Civil Defense, confirmed the news to 964media.

The second missing person is identified as a man in his 30s or 40s working in Duhok as a laborer.

The tragic flooding event on March 19, 2024, struck Dohuk and nearby Zakho, claiming two lives and displacing dozens of families. Civil defense teams have been searching since the disaster, with the first victim’s body found on March 28, 2024, nine days after the floods subsided.

The search then continued for the second victim, culminating in today’s discovery. Previously, Abdulaziz told 964media that their teams extended their efforts to the Mosul Dam area to locate the second missing individual. Flows from many of Duhok’s waterways end up in the Mosul Dam that’s situated south of Duhok, nestled between the towering mountain ranges that flank the city on either side.

Recovery efforts were hampered by debris, including rocks and trees, scattered throughout the flooded areas, according to the spokesperson.

Preliminary assessments by the Kurdistan Regional Government indicate that the recent floods in the Kurdistan Region, resulting from heavy rainfall spanning from March 18 to March 21, 2024, have inflicted a financial impact of 64 billion Iraqi dinars (nearly $50 million).
