Locals cite lack of waste management

Trash piles up outside schools in Kirkuk, concerning teachers

KIRKUK, August 26 — Teachers across Kirkuk have expressed concerns about the accumulation of garbage around their schools, which are situated in residential neighborhoods. They say local residents are tossing their trash out indiscriminately and inconsiderately.

Ali Al-Azzawi, Principal of Al-Shura School, told 964: “Local residents in the area are not responsive to our appeals, and the municipality is not providing bins for garbage collection.”

“We also suffer from them burning the trahs, which has significantly affected the walls of the schools. They have been extensively damaged due to the smoke rising from the flames,” he added.

“Locals gather the waste and throw it randomly near the school walls because there are no government garbage trucks. These trucks only pass through most areas once a week.”
