Man accused of blackmailing woman over private photos arrested by Al-Rusafa police

BAGHDAD — Police in Baghdad Al-Rusafa arrested a man Thursday accused of blackmailing a woman online by threatening to publish her private photos on social media unless she paid him a sum of money.

The Baghdad Al-Rusafa Police Command said in a statement that the operation was carried out under the supervision of the district’s police chief. Officers from the local police station and patrol unit in the New Baghdad area worked in coordination with other security agencies to track the suspect.

The arrest followed a report filed by the victim, who told police she was being blackmailed by someone she knew. The suspect had threatened to share her private photos online if she didn’t pay him.

A task force was formed to handle the case. “After a major and well-executed effort, an ambush was set and the suspect was caught red-handed,” the statement said.

Police said the suspect confessed to the crime. He was taken into custody while legal procedures are carried out.
