U.S. tariffs will not impact Iraq’s energy shipments, says adviser to PM
BAGHDAD — Iraq’s energy exports, including crude oil, will not be affected by the tariffs announced by U.S. President Donald Trump, according to Farhad Alaaldin, foreign affairs adviser to the Iraqi prime minister.
“In light of the recent announcement by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, regarding the imposition of reciprocal tariffs on a number of countries, we would like to clarify that Iraqi energy exports, including crude oil, are not subject to these tariffs,” Alaaldin said in a statement to the Iraqi News Agency.
He added that Iraq currently exports between 7 to 8 million barrels of crude oil and its derivatives monthly to the United States, and these shipments “have not been affected by the recent customs measures.”
On April 2, President Trump unveiled a comprehensive set of tariffs affecting a broad range of U.S. imports. Dubbed “Liberation Day,” the initiative introduces a universal 10% tariff on all imported goods, with higher, country-specific tariffs targeting nations with substantial trade imbalances with the United States.
Farhad Alaaldin’s statement to the Iraqi News Agency:
In light of the recent announcement by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, regarding the imposition of reciprocal tariffs on a number of countries, we would like to clarify that Iraqi energy exports, including crude oil, are not subject to these tariffs.
Iraq is currently exporting between 7 to 8 million barrels of crude oil and its derivatives monthly to the United States. These exports constitute the mainstay of Iraq’s exports and have not been affected by the recent customs measures.
Other Iraqi exports are limited in size and scope, which means the economic impact of these tariffs on Iraq will be extremely limited.
The strategic partnership between Iraq and the United States remains firm and strong, and these measures will not affect the core of the economic or diplomatic relationship between the two countries.
Iraq continues to be committed to deepening cooperation with the United States across various sectors, particularly in energy, investment, and regional stability.
