Traffic crash in Kalar industrial area kills one, injures another

SULAYMANIYAH — One person was killed and another injured in a traffic incident in Kalar’s industrial area on Thursday, the Garmian Traffic Directorate said in a statement.

Authorities reported that a three-wheeled motorcycle collided with a truck, resulting in the death of the motorcycle’s passenger, born in 1992. The motorcycle’s driver, born in 2009, sustained injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Traffic police arrived at the scene and launched an investigation into the cause of the crash.

In 2023, traffic incidents were the leading cause of death in Sulaymaniyah governorate, accounting for nearly 25% of the 592 total deaths examined, with more than 83% of the victims being male. Traffic statistics for the first six months of 2024 show 111 fatalities, while in 2023 the Sulaymaniyah Traffic Directorate recorded 1,047 incidents, resulting in 153 deaths and 1,887 injuries.
