Police officer killed in Dhi Qar raid targeting kidnapping suspect

DHI QAR — A police lieutenant colonel was killed and another officer injured Friday during a raid in Al-Ziyadat village north of Dhi Qar, as security forces attempted to apprehend a suspect wanted for kidnapping.

“A lieutenant colonel was martyred during a raid targeting a man wanted for kidnapping,” a security source told 964media. “Another officer was injured in an exchange of fire.”

The source said a gunfight broke out when Al-Gharaf Criminal Investigation and Al-Gharaf Police arrived at the suspect’s location. The slain officer was struck in the head during the clash. The suspect remains at large.

Security forces have sealed off the area and reinforcements have been deployed as the manhunt continues.

In a statement, the Ministry of Interior identified the victim as Lt. Col. Muhannad Risan Saqban and praised his sacrifice. “There are men in the Ministry of Interior who race to sacrifice for the security and safety of citizens,” the ministry said. “Here is one of the heroes of the ministry offering himself as a martyr during the execution of a duty to arrest a criminal involved in a kidnapping case.”

The ministry extended condolences to the officer’s family. “Our officers will remain the sword that strikes down crime and delivers justice,” the statement said.
