National Security Service seizes 40 tons of medication

DIYALA — In a strategic operation, the Iraqi National Security Service intercepted 40 tons of smuggled medications at an entry checkpoint to Diyala governorate on Saturday. The contraband was en route from the Kurdistan region to Baghdad in trucks.

The National Security Service launched the operation following a tip about a convoy transporting unregistered and uninspected medications from the Kurdistan Region to the capital, according to a statement. With judicial approval, a team in Diyala governorate staged an ambush at a control point, capturing two trailer trucks filled with illegal drugs.

The operation led to the arrest of three individuals linked to the smuggling. Preliminary interrogations uncovered information about additional vehicles on the same route, prompting another successful ambush that resulted in the capture of two more vehicles and their drivers. The total of approximately 40 tons of smuggled medications was seized in coordination with relevant authorities, and all suspects have been referred for investigation to face legal proceedings.
