Well drilling, tree felling charges
Sulaymaniyah forest police arrest six
SULAYMANIYAH – The Sulaymaniyah Forest and Environment Police Directorate reported the arrest of six individuals in the Baziyan and Taq Taq areas for illegal well drilling and tree felling
Hemn Kamerkhan, the directorate’s spokesperson, told 964media that in Baziyan, two individuals were apprehended on suspicion of unauthorized well drilling, with law enforcement confiscating two drilling rigs and a tractor. Additionally, three people were detained in the same area for allegedly cutting down a sycamore tree. Another was arrested in Taq Taq for similar violations, who police say was caught transporting a pickup truck filled with cut wood.
Authorities also seized a pickup truck loaded with wood and two saws used in the illegal activity, Kamerkhan noted.
“Our forest police units are tirelessly working to halt such activities, yet some citizens persist in ignoring their environmental duties, jeopardizing the ecosystem,” he stated.
He highlighted that, under regional environmental laws, the act of illegal tree felling carries a fine of 500,000 ($330) Iraqi dinars.
