Police apprehend suspect in felling of century-old tree

SULAYMANIYAH, January 25 – The Barzinja Forestry and Environment Police Directorate recently arrested an individual in Haji Mamend village for allegedly cutting down numerous trees, some over a century old.

According to an official statement, the police say the suspect had cut down 10 oak trees aged between 70 and 100 years.

The suspect is now under investigation, and legal proceedings are underway, including his transfer to the courts for legal proceedings.

This follows an earlier incident regarding the deliberate burning of a 200-year-old oak tree in Darbandikhan’s Rezhna village earlier this month.

The loss of this ancient tree deeply affected the community and the environment. In response, civil society members and village residents planted 200 new oak trees, symbolically representing each year of the destroyed tree’s life.
