Criticism aimed at neglect of sports in education
Erbil education department concludes a inter-school soccer competition
ERBIL — The conclusion of the Erbil Central Education Department’s school soccer program has sparked criticism from the activities supervisor, who lamented the inadequate emphasis placed on sports by educators.
On Monday, the season’s final games unfolded at the Erbil Women’s Club sports hall, showcasing Shkak School’s narrow 2-1 victory over Peshkewtin School, and Erkhewan defeating Sherfkendi 3-1. The event culminated with awards being handed out to the standout players.
The tournament saw participation from 68 primary schools across grades 1 to 6 and 30 intermediate schools from grades 7 to 9, underscoring the program’s broad reach.
Kanebi Aziz, serving as the activities supervisor for the Erbil education sector, told 964media that the initiative serves as an ideal platform for scouting and nurturing young talent. He noted, however, that the once-common practice of club coaches scouting talent in Kurdistan’s stadiums has seen a notable decline.
Aziz expressed concern over the diminished engagement of physical education teachers in schools, attributing it to a reduction in sports activities. He also pointed to budgetary constraints as a significant barrier to providing schools with the necessary sports equipment and offering professional development for teachers in the realm of physical education.
