'a strong brand in the market'

Over 50,000 tons of agricultural produce sent from Duhok to the rest of Iraq

DUHOK– More than 50,000 tons of agricultural produce from Dohuk were exported to central and southern Iraq this year according to the director of agriculture in the governorate, which is renowned for its wide variety of crops.

Ahmad Jamil, Director of Agriculture in Duhok, told 964media, “This year, more than 50,000 tons of local products from Duhok Governorate have been sent to other governorates in Iraq. Due to the high quality of our farmers’ produce, Duhok’s agricultural products have become a strong brand in the market.”

He explained that the increase in export rates has encouraged the cultivation of more land with the most demanded crops. He also said that that in the past two years, farmers in Duhok governorate have incurred no losses, rather, “their conditions have significantly improved and continue to do so.”

“The most in-demand products currently are potatoes, tomatoes, onions, cucumbers, and watermelons. Additionally, other products like cherries, apples, peaches, and muskmelons are also being sent to various Iraqi governorates, with their market prices remaining high and stable,” he added.

For this year, the cultivated areas in Duhok include: 2678 acres of tomatoes, 2209 acres of cucumbers, 320 acres of eggplants, 9225 acres of potatoes, 3143 acres of muskmelons, 1508 acres of watermelons, 2163 acres of onions.

Duhok is recognized for its variety of agricultural products. The governorate cultivates various crops and backs numerous agricultural initiatives to boost local production and lessen dependency on imports. A 5,000 square meter center will be established in Duhok to gather and market local agricultural goods.

Seasonal diseases and Turkish bombardment  in Duhok governorate have caused considerable damage to the region’s products and agricultural lands. “Over 500 productive walnut and grape trees have been burned due to the conflict. More than 100 rows of villagers’ grape orchards and gardens in our village alone have been destroyed,” a local farmer told 964media.

On July 4, Turkish bombardment ignited fires that destroyed about 125 acres of farmland and orchards in Sargale, Duhok.
