Beating online prices

English books attract visitors at international book fair

BAGHDAD — The Iraq International Book Fair, hosted by Al-Mada Foundation, wrapped up on Saturday evening in Baghdad, drawing significant attention to English-language books. The fair offered a wide selection of English titles at competitive prices, encouraging young Iraqis to buy books locally instead of relying on online orders, which often come with long waits and higher costs.

Ali Hameed, proprietor of Akkad Publishing House and Bookstore, noted a strong demand for English publications among Iraqi readers. “There’s a clear need for English books here, and responding to this demand has allowed us to save readers both time and money.

“Previously, they had to wait over a month and pay more for international deliveries. Now, they can browse and buy these books in our bookstore at lower prices than online,” Hameed told 964media.

A newfound emphasis on English-language literature underscores a growing appreciation for international works among Iraqi youth and demonstrates the value of making such books more accessible and affordable within the country.
