Interest in Baghdad metro project by global companies surges

BAGHDAD — International interest in the Baghdad Metro project is surging, with 26 companies from Germany, Italy, Spain, China, India, and Qatar expressing their desire to be part of the ambitious development. The announcement on Monday by the Iraqi Cabinet highlighted the project’s global appeal, attracting renowned firms from around the world.

Iraq is undertaking a number of largescale infrastructure projects, including the development of Al-Nisour Square in the capital Baghdad. That project, currently managed by China Railway company, is in line with the federal government’s efforts to alleviate traffic congestion in the sprawling city.

Prime Minister Mohammed Shiaa’ Al-Sudani met with representatives from China Railway on Monday. According to an official statement from the prime minister’s office, the meeting included a presentation by China Railway showcasing its capabilities, resources, and interest in potential involvement in the metro project.

Iraqi official revealed the metro project on February 8, accompanied by the signing of contracts with an engineering consultancy specializing in such large-scale endeavors.

This widespread interest from firms around the world underscores the strategic importance of the Baghdad Metro project, not only for addressing Baghdad’s traffic challenges but also for attracting foreign investment and boosting the Iraqi economy.
