'Every Iraqi citizen's dream'

Baghdad metro set to cover 85-percent of capital

BAGHDAD – The Baghdad Metro project has ambitious plans to cover 85% of the capital city, becoming the largest metro system in the region, according to the prime minister’s transportation, Nasser Al-Asadi.

“The Baghdad Metro project is every Iraqi citizen’s dream,” Al-Asadi declared in a statement on Thursday, announcing significant interest from both Arab and international companies to undertake the initiative.

Al-Asadi outlined the project’s scope which consists of seven lines stretching over 148 kilometers with 64 stations, incorporating some of the world’s most advanced systems.

The network is further expected to connect key locations across Baghdad, including universities, markets, religious sites, sports stadiums, and government ministries. “The seven lines, each starting and ending in different areas, will link the Karkh and Rusafa districts from three locations, including a line to Baghdad International Airport,” Al-Asadi detailed.

He further emphasized the project’s regional significance, attracting interest from “European, Asian, Qatari, and Emirati companies.”

“The initiative is fully investment-based with the state overseeing its execution,” he clarified.

This move reflects the government’s strategy to bolster the private sector and provide job opportunities and investments. With 913 billion dinars allocated for design and supervision, the Baghdad Metro project is gaining momentum.

Al-Asadi hinted at the future inclusion of street-level trams, suggesting the initiative may even reach into narrow side streets, further enhancing connectivity throughout the city.
