Celebrating Abuthiya poetry

Zubair festival celebrates legacy of poet Sa’eed Shabk

ZUBAIR — Writers from different cities gathered in Zubair, Basra for a festival commemorating the late poet Sa’eed Shabk.

Maher Sharida, head of the cultural association hosting the festival, told 964media, “This festival marks the third edition of our events here, dedicated to remembering the renowned Abuthiya poet Sa’eed Shabk, who passed away in 2021 in the city of Zubair.”

Shabk achieved significant status in the literary world, particularly for his contributions to the distinctive Southern genre of Abuthiya, which represents “the sighs of mothers and elders.” His works continue to be shared among people at festivals and gatherings.

Adel Habib, a poet, commented, “The late Sa’eed Shabk left a cultural and popular impact on his fans in Zubair, especially with his specialization in Abuthiya. He lived in a city rich in the culture of poetry, chants, and other poetic forms.”

Habib added that many young poets in Zubair deserve recognition, suggesting that events always be organized to remember them. “This enhances the city’s culture, authenticity, and the depth of its roots,” Habib stated.
