The hunt for militants continues
Iraqi criminal court sentences defendant to life in prison for ISIS affiliation
BAGHDAD, January 30 – Iraq’s central criminal court issued a life sentence on Tuesday to an individual found guilty of being an ISIS affiliate.
The defendant was found to be an ISIS supporter based on evidence including playing the militant group’s anthems and wearing a so-called military uniform associated with the group.
A statement issued by the court’s media office further detailed that the defendant was found to be in possession of ISIS propaganda material that included video recordings and photos of the groups former leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi.
The statement further said that Tuesday’s sentencing was issued according to Iraq’s anti-terror law.
More than six years since Iraqi forces claimed victory over the ISIS organization in 2017, military and security personnel have reported recurrent incidents involving sleeper cells and sympathizers across the country.
