Halabja teachers union organizes blood drive to support area thalassemia patients
HALABJA, January 30 — Teachers in Halabja have announced a blood drive on Wednesday as part of a campaign to support the city’s thalassemia center and blood bank amid a shortage of supplies.
Thalassemia, a hereditary blood disorder, results in a lower percentage of healthy red blood cells and leads to reduced levels of hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the vital protein responsible for giving red blood cells their color and facilitating the transport of oxygen to various parts of the body.
The Halabja branch of the Kurdistan Teachers’ Union is leading campaign efforts and highlighted that many patients in the area are students.
Union member Mohammed Wahab told 964media that teachers are also ready to donate blood.
“We have been informed by the blood bank that there is a shortage of blood. Therefore, we found it necessary to organize this campaign,” Wahab said.
