Iraqi interior ministry is phasing out old, paper-based identity cards

BAGHDAD, January 19 — Iraq’s Ministry of Interior has announced that paper-based identity cards and citizenship documents will be discontinued beginning March 1, 2024.

In a statement released on Thursday, the ministry specified that existing citizenship and identity cards will remain valid until their expiration dates, after which citizens will need to apply for and use new cards.

The ministry’s statement emphasized that the directive applies exclusively to local citizens and does not extend to citizens residing abroad.
