U.S. ambassador hails new figures on personal banking

BAGHDAD, January 23 — Alina Romanowski, the U.S. Ambassador to Baghdad, hailed on Tuesday a landmark advancement for Iraq’s banking sector, noting a 31% increase in the number of individuals with accounts in local Iraqi banks.

Statement on X:

#DYK… Central Bank of Iraq data suggests total deposits held with Iraqi commercial banks rose by about 37% in the past two years, and from 2021 to 2022, the total number of account holders in local banks rose 31%. Impressive progress!  By working with Iraq on reforms, we are helping to build trust in the banking sector. Modern banking services enable greater foreign investment & protection from financial crime, theft, and loss.
