Halabja records rise in unauthorized logging due to high cost of fuel

HALABJA, January 19 — Authorities logged 25 environmental crimes in Halabja in 2023, 20 of which were related to illegal logging.

The surge in logging is attributed to the high cost of fuel, prompting citizens to turn to unauthorized tree-cutting.

Kosar Mahmoud, the head of Halabja’s Public Information and Media department, told 964media that the local environmental office plans to bolster collaboration with forestry police this year to effectively combat environmental transgressions.

Highlighting proactive measures, Mahmoud stated, “For this year, we intend to launch an awareness campaign against logging, sharing our data with the public to report any attempts to harm the environment.”

The environmental office filed 45 complaints regarding various locations.
