Soran directorate to propose reservoir and dam construction to support irrigation needs

SORAN, January 17 — The Soran Agriculture Directorate is advancing a proposal to construct water reservoirs and dams, aiming to enhance agricultural irrigation across their region.

In contrast to most areas in the Kurdistan Region, no dams currently exist in Soran.

Kamran Mamand, Director General of Agriculture for Soran Administration, told 964media that officials have deemed it necessary to establish a series of ponds and dams within their jurisdiction for water collection.

“We have plans for a specialized team to assess potential sites for pond and dam construction within the region, and intend to submit a comprehensive proposal thereafter,” he said.

Mamand noted the case of Rzhdoor village, which was forced to end a once-thriving rice cultivation project as a result of water scarcity. He emphasized that the village, among others, would be suitable for the type of infrastructure his directorate is pushing for.
