Akre authorities apprehends group for distortion of archeological sites
AKRE, DOHUK, January 13– Akre police have apprehended a group accused of distorting archeological sites in the district, marking another instance in an ongoing effort to address the issue. Hiwa Shamal, the head of Archeology and Culture Directorate of Akre, informed 964media that multiple unidentified groups had engaged in unauthorized excavation of archeological sites in Akre.
“We have filed a complaint against several individuals at the Akre police station. They operated as a group and have been apprehended, with investigations currently underway,” he added.
This incident is part of a broader pattern, as the Director highlighted several previous complaints filed for alterations to archaeological sites in Akre.
According to data obtained by 964media, Duhok governate boasts more than 2,221 archaeological sites, with continuous efforts dedicated to discovering new sites.
