Suq Al-Shuyukh Sewage department says Euphrates river pollution is “minimal”

DHI QAR, January 12 — The Environmental Department in Suq Al-Shuyukh, southern Dhi Qar, has raised alarms over the increasing pollution in the Euphrates River due to liquid and solid waste. However, the Sewage Department assures that the city’s contribution to river pollution is minimal, limited to light waste and rainwater, pending the completion of the major Suq Al-Shuyukh sewage project.

Hussam Mansour, Environmental Director, told 964media:

“Water pollution remains one of the gravest issues for the residents of Suq Al-Shuyukh. The Environmental Department has taken several legal steps and coordinated with relevant departments to reduce pollutants. The district’s downstream location in the Euphrates River exacerbates the concentration of pollutants and sewage, in addition to waste from the city’s vegetable market. The best solution involves cooperation between service departments (municipality, sewage, water resources), stopping or diverting pollutant discharges until the sewage project, announced by the Cabinet, is completed.”

Ali Hassan, Director of Sewage, confirmed their commitment to environmental preservation, stating:

“We confirm that there are no sewage discharges into the Euphrates River, except for temporary rainwater and light water discharges. The upcoming phase will see a permanent solution to these temporary discharges by constructing specialized lifting stations in various areas of the district. The discharge will be directed to a treatment unit instead of the river.”
