Suspected drug dealer involved in Zakho shootout dies

ZAKHO — A suspected drug dealer who was critically injured during a confrontation with security forces in Zakho has died, authorities said.

The shootout occurred earlier this month, when security forces tried to arrest a man they identified as F.M.S., a Zakho resident. The suspect resisted arrest, which led to an exchange of gunfire. The suspect sustained critical injuries, and two security officers were lightly injured.

A Zakho Police Department source told 964media that the suspect was shot in the head and chest during the confrontation. The source added that the suspect was hospitalized in critical condition at the Heart Center in Duhok and was under heavy security until his death around 2 a.m. today.

A police source in Zakho, who requested anonymity, previously told 964media that the suspect had been on the wanted list and had not surrendered to authorities, which led to the confrontation.

Iraqi authorities arrested more than 144 suspected drug traffickers in 2023 amid what officials describe as an ongoing and escalating crisis.
