Recruitment Frenzy in Basra for Counter-Terrorism

BASRA, December 26 – In a significant display of interest, young individuals in Basra flocked to Zubair’s office street, eagerly awaiting the chance to volunteer as soldiers in the Counter-Terrorism Unit. The crowd gathered on Tuesday morning, demonstrating a high level of enthusiasm and anticipation for the opportunity to serve.

The Counter-Terrorism Unit facilitated the application process by providing an online link for potential volunteers. The announcement, made on its official page, detailed that the application process would be active from 8:00 AM on Tuesday, December 26, 2023, until 11:59 PM on Thursday, December 28, 2023.

Despite the digital nature of the application, many young aspirants, unsure of how to navigate the online process, turned to local photocopy shops for assistance. Mohammed Qasim, a photocopy office owner, witnessed a large crowd from early morning. He noted, “Most of the youth don’t know how to enter the information or upload the required documents, so they come to our offices.” Qasim has been actively assisting by noting down names and helping with the online submission as soon as the link becomes operational.

One of the volunteers, Abdullah Hussein, expressed his motivations for joining, highlighting economic challenges and the prospect of a stable job. “This is an opportunity to get a job, and I hope it materializes. I am tired of the ‘labour’ that does not provide a decent living, and I do not have enough money to get married,” he said.
