Eight villages borders will be submerged

Iraq to construct a massive dam in Duhok governorate

DUHOK — The Iraqi government has announced plans to construct a massive dam in the Akre district, which will be the largest dam in the Duhok Governorate. Ramazan Sharif, director of Akre Water Management, stated that the new dam will impact eight villages within Akre’s borders.

This decision is said to be part of a broader initiative to build three dams in the Kurdistan Region. According to Sharif, the Akre dam will reach a height of 112 meters and cover an area of 37,065 acres. In comparison, the current largest dam in the Duhok Governorate, the Duhok Dam, stands at nearly 60 meters tall.

The planned dam will span the borders of the Bardarash, Sheikhan, and Akre districts. Sharif noted that eight villages within Akre’s borders will be submerged, seven of which are predominantly Christian.

According to Sharif, a committee had previously worked on providing compensation to these villages. However, with the commencement of the dam’s construction, another review will be conducted to document and finalize the compensation process.

He added that the Iraqi government has allocated $500 million for the dam’s construction, which will be managed by a designated company.

In addition to benefiting agriculture, particularly in the Nawkur plain, the dam will also have the capacity to generate 24 megawatts of electricity. “The main water sources for the dam will be from Gara Mountain and the Khazir and Riye Zar rivers,” said Sharif.
