Officials explore proposal to establish new museum for Iraqi civilizations in Baghdad

BAGHDAD, December 6 — Prime Minister Mohammed Shiaa’ Al-Sudani’s office held discussions with the Ministry of Culture on Tuesday regarding a proposal to build a new museum of Iraqi civilizations in Baghdad.

The initiative aims to create opportunities for collaboration with leading museums, major universities, and international institutions dedicated to heritage and manuscripts. The plan includes signing memoranda of understanding to establish partnerships.

A statement from the Ministry of Culture said:

The meeting, attended by Cultural Advisor to the Prime Minister Dr. Aaref Al-Saadi and President of the General Authority for Antiquities and Heritage Dr. Laith Majid, addressed the proposal for the creation of an architectural monument to serve as a museum for Iraqi civilizations.

The participants discussed mapping the location in the capital, Baghdad, and the exceptional announcement of its significance, aligning with its historical, cultural, and civilizational importance to reach a global audience.

The attendees also emphasized the need to engage with leading global museums, major universities, and international institutions dedicated to heritage and manuscripts. They discussed the signing of memoranda of understanding to establish moral, material, and artistic support partnerships.

The Iraqi government has been increasingly focused on the issue of antiquities, recognizing them as a cultural and civilizational legacy for the country, which has been the birthplace of some of the world’s oldest civilizations.
