Two held in Baghdad over stolen safe with two kilograms of gold
BAGHDAD — Police in Baghdad’s Karkh have arrested two men and recovered two kilograms of gold jewelry and cash taken from a safe stolen from a house, the Karkh Police Command said Friday.
Officers from the Karkh Anti-Crime Directorate formed an investigative team after the burglary was reported, gathered evidence and tracked the suspects’ movements before arresting them, the command said. It described both as repeat offenders and said they confessed under questioning. They have been referred to the judiciary. The amount of cash was not disclosed.
Gold thefts elsewhere remain unsolved. Thieves took more than five kilograms from two jewelry shops in Daquq, south of Kirkuk, in raids months apart, with the district commissioner saying a shortage of cameras and poor footage quality had hampered investigations. In Basra, two thieves cut through the roof of a shop in Abu al-Khasib, emptied the safe and left the same way undetected.
