Iraq mandates annual vehicle safety inspections with fines for non-compliance

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s General Traffic Directorate announced Thursday that all vehicle owners must undergo annual safety and roadworthiness inspections, with a fine of 100,000 dinars — about $65 — imposed on those who fail to comply.

The decision was approved by Interior Minister Abdul Amir al-Shammari under Article 25 of Traffic Law No. 8 of 2019. Vehicle owners whose last inspection was conducted more than one year ago must visit designated inspection sites in Baghdad and other governorates to obtain a valid certificate confirming their vehicle is fit for road use.
