Drone strike wounds three members of one family at Koya refugee camp
KOYA — A suicide drone struck the Zewya Spi camp in Koya district on Thursday evening, wounding three members of one family, local officials said.
The camp houses Iranian Kurdish political refugees.
Tariq Haidari, the mayor of Koya district, told 964media, “At 6:55 this evening, a suicide drone attacked the camp.”
He said that although homes inside the camp are generally unoccupied, the drone struck the house of a resident whose family had returned at that moment to visit their home.
“The drone targeted the house of a resident whose family had returned to visit their home inside the camp,” Haidari said.
The three injured were a married couple and their child.
He said the three injured family members sustained minor wounds and would leave the hospital after receiving treatment.
Haidari added that “their injuries are minor and after receiving the necessary treatment they will leave the hospital shortly.”
A loud explosion was heard at the time of the attack, followed by flames and smoke rising from the targeted location.
Since the escalation began, the Koya area has been targeted six times, but this is the first attack on Zewya Spi camp.
The strike follows a series of attacks on Iranian Kurdish opposition positions in Koya district. On March 6, Iran targeted a Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan base at Azadi Camp with seven missiles and several drones, wounding one Peshmerga fighter.
Azadi Camp has been repeatedly targeted since the war between the United States, Israel and Iran began on Feb. 28. In another strike earlier that week, three drones and a missile hit the camp and a weapons storage facility belonging to the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan in the same district.
