Missile strike kills one at Iranian Kurdish opposition base in Erbil

ERBIL — A missile strike hit a base of the Kurdistan Freedom Party in Degala subdistrict in Erbil governorate before noon Wednesday, killing one fighter and wounding three others, local officials said.

Soran Hawezi, head of Degala subdistrict, said the attack used three missiles and was not a drone strike. He identified the killed as a member of the party. A separate source said three people were wounded, all Peshmerga affiliated with the group.

PAK is one of five Iranian Kurdish parties that formed the Kurdistan Iranian Parties Alliance in preparation for potential changes in Iran.

The strike is the latest in a series of attacks on Iranian Kurdish opposition bases across the Kurdistan Region. On Tuesday, three drones and a missile hit Camp Azadi and a weapons storage facility belonging to the Democratic Party of Iranian Kurdistan in Koya district. The PDKI called the strike “a serious humanitarian and legal breach,” saying the targeting of a hospital “constitutes a violation of international humanitarian law.”

Reuters reported that U.S. officials have held talks with Iranian Kurdish leaders, while CNN reported the CIA is examining a plan that could involve arming those groups. Both outlets said no final decisions have been announced.
