Al-Sudani, Talabani discuss political cooperation amid government talks
BAGHDAD — Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani met Monday with Bafel Talabani, leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, to discuss the country’s political and economic situation, according to a statement from the prime minister’s media office.
The meeting focused on the latest developments in Iraq and underscored the importance of “coordinated efforts and constructive cooperation among all national forces,” the statement said. The two officials emphasized working from a “unified vision” to support development and economic revival throughout the country.
Al-Sudani and Talabani also reiterated the need to meet constitutional deadlines. The statement noted their shared commitment to “adhere to the established timelines for completing the remaining constitutional entitlements” as a means to secure long-term stability.
Voters nationwide cast ballots for all 329 seats in the Council of Representatives in November. Lawmakers in late December elected Haibat al-Halbousi as speaker at the start of the new parliamentary term, while negotiations to form the next government remain ongoing.
Reports circulating late Saturday suggested Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani had agreed to step aside in favor of former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki as the Shiite Coordination Framework weighs its nominee for the next government.
