Iraq issues warning against laser use near airports
BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Joint Operations Command on Tuesday warned that laser lights must not be used near military or civilian airports, saying the beams pose a serious risk to pilots during takeoff and landing and endanger overall flight safety.
In a statement, the command said the use of laser light creates “serious risks to the safety of military and civilian aviation” and can affect pilots’ visibility at critical moments. It said the directive is meant to protect air operations, prevent threats to people and property, and preserve the country’s reputation “in this regard.”
The command stressed that the ban applies “under any circumstance” in areas surrounding airports, whether lasers are used by civilians or security personnel. It said anyone who violates the directive will be referred to the courts in line with applicable laws and regulations.
