Suspected drone crash sparks Karbala desert fire as officials deny civilian aircraft down

KARBALA — A suspected drone crash triggered a large fire in the Ain al-Tamur district of Karbala governorate Sunday night, prompting search operations and official denials that a civilian aircraft had gone down in Iraq.

Video obtained by 964media showed flames engulfing a wide area of desert terrain, with thick smoke rising from scattered wreckage and metal fragments visible across the site. Security sources told 964media the fire was caused by a drone crash, with all senior security commanders present at the scene.

Iraqi Civil Aviation Authority president Bangin Rekani said reports of a civilian aircraft crash were “baseless,” adding that air traffic was being monitored continuously and no such incident had been recorded. He called on media and social media users to rely on official sources and avoid spreading rumors.

Karbala Governor Naseef Jassim al-Khattabi similarly denied reports of a passenger aircraft crash, saying the fallen object was likely a drone.

No casualties were immediately reported and authorities had not officially identified the object as of late Sunday.

The incident occurred as regional tensions escalated following an Iranian missile and drone attack on Israel, which Iranian authorities said was launched in response to Israeli strikes on Beirut’s southern suburbs. Hours after the attack, Iraq’s Civil Aviation Authority announced the closure of Iraqi airspace to all arriving, departing and transit flights for 72 hours as a precautionary measure.
