Kirkuk municipality completes “Martyrs” bridge and tunnel project

KIRKUK, November 4 — Kirkuk Municipality has announced the completion of all phases of the “Martyrs” bridge and tunnel project, with an expected opening in one month. Although officially named the “Martyrs” bridge and tunnel, it is locally known as the “Celebrations” bridge and tunnel due to its proximity to the former celebration square.

The project includes a two-way bridge and a two-way tunnel, both of which lead to the Exhibition Street and the Green Neighborhood. The bridges connect four major areas: Wasiti, Green, Jerusalem Street, and Ninety.

Adnan Mohammed, the Director of Media for Kirkuk Municipality, said:

“The project to construct the Martyrs’ tunnel and bridge, consisting of three phases and handovers, had a total cost of 17 billion dinars. The project is in its final stages, with some finishing touches remaining, including landscaping and street planning. It is scheduled to open within a month.”

In 2020, work on the bridge began but faced delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which halted work and disrupted progress. Additionally, the initial and second executing companies faced delays, leading to their replacement by a third company. The project is now nearing completion and is set to be handed over to the local government.
