Daquq markets see surge in local grapes and produce, with seedless ‘Yaqout’ variety leading demand

KIRKUK — Markets in Daquq welcomed eight varieties of locally grown grapes this week, shipped from farms in Samarra, with the seedless “Yaqout” grape emerging as the most popular among customers, vendors said.

Fares Shakour, a prominent grocery store owner in the Khurza area, told 964media that the Yaqout variety stands out for its unique flavor and lack of seeds. “Today I received eight types of grapes, most notably ‘Yaqout,’ known for its distinct taste and complete lack of seeds,” he said. “Other varieties include Makiyaj, Dees al-Anz, Kishmish, Beidh al-Hamam, Halawani, Kamali, and Ra’asi — all of which have been well received by locals.”

Shakour noted a growing appetite among customers for fresh, locally sourced fruits and vegetables. “I’ve also received a diverse selection of fruits including black and yellow figs, prickly pears, apricots, plums, and apples — all fresh and locally grown,” he said.

His store also features vegetables from nearby Daquq farms, including tomatoes, eggplants, and peppers — particularly from Imam village, which he said are in high demand — along with melons, cantaloupes, and a regional cucumber variety known as Shamsi.

“I also offer three types of local okra: Hasnawi, Batra, and Baghdadi, along with various other vegetables,” he added. “People prefer local products because they’re better in taste and quality than imported ones, even if some are more expensive.”

Shakour said he plans to prioritize domestic produce throughout the season. “Once the season ends, I might have to offer imported goods, but only as a temporary option,” he said.
