Iraq announces public holidays for Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Ghadir later this month

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Council of Ministers announced Tuesday the suspension of official working hours across all ministries and state institutions for the Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Ghadir holidays.

Official work will be suspended from Tuesday May 26 until Saturday May 30 for Eid al-Adha, resuming on Sunday May 31. An additional public holiday has been approved for Thursday June 4 for Eid al-Ghadir.

Eid al-Adha marks the culmination of the annual Hajj pilgrimage and is observed with prayers, family gatherings and animal sacrifices. Eid al-Ghadir is observed primarily by Shiite Muslims and commemorates the Prophet Muhammad’s designation of Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib as his successor.
