Iraq’s electoral commission sets Aug. 5 for candidate number draw ahead of November elections
BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Independent High Electoral Commission announced Tuesday that it will hold a lottery draw on Aug. 5 to assign numbers to political alliances, parties, and independent candidates contesting the upcoming parliamentary elections.
Commission spokesperson Jumana Ghalai told 964media the draw will be held after the verification process is complete. “We need 15 days to finalize the verification of all data submitted by alliances and candidates,” she said.
The draw determines the list numbers under which parties and candidates will appear on ballots.
Preparations for the vote are ongoing, with the commission holding a series of meetings with the electoral security committee to coordinate logistics and ensure a stable voting environment, Ghalai said.
The sixth term of Iraq’s Council of Representatives will be elected on Nov. 11, 2025. Campaigning is scheduled to begin on Oct. 9.
Iraq’s parliament consists of 329 seats.
