Suspect dies by suicide after injuring officer in standoff with security forces
KARBALA — A man wanted by authorities died by suicide after shooting and injuring a police officer during a standoff with security forces in the Al-Daoum area of Hindiya district, east of Karbala, on Sunday morning, according to a security source.
The source told 964media that the injured officer was transferred to a hospital for treatment and denied social media rumors claiming the officer had been killed during the raid.
At around 10 a.m., a witness from the area said, “There was an exchange of gunfire between a security force consisting of the protection unit from Hindiya police station and intelligence officers, and the suspect (A. Sh) near the Abu Hashem Bridge.”
The witness added, “One security officer was injured in the exchange.”
Additional forces arrived at the scene to support the operation and attempted to storm the house. The suspect, described as being in his fifties, refused to surrender and opened fire before taking his own life. His body was later seen being carried by police in a blanket.
The man was reportedly involved in ongoing legal disputes with relatives over agricultural land, which had led to arrest warrants being issued. The source said the suspect used live ammunition to resist arrest before ending his life. His body was transferred to Hindiya Hospital.
