Two arrested at Kele crossing with counterfeit euros and dollars

RAPARIN — Two men were arrested Saturday at the informal Kele border crossing with large amounts of counterfeit euros and U.S. dollars, authorities said, adding that the suspects intended to circulate the fake currency in markets across the Kurdistan Region.

Kele, located in Sulaymaniyah’s Raparin autonomous administration, functions as an informal crossing point between the Kurdistan Region and Iran.

Abbas Aziz, director of Raparin Customs, told 964media, “Today, security personnel at the Kele border point, under the supervision of the Directorate of Border Security, arrested two individuals carrying counterfeit money.”

He added, “They were found in possession of €12,500 and $2,000 in fake currency.”

The suspects were detained inside the Kurdistan Region’s side of the border and are currently under investigation.

According to information obtained by 964media from a border security source, the two individuals are Iranian nationals. The counterfeit money had been brought from Iran and was intended for circulation in local markets within the Kurdistan Region.
