Storm destroys school in Chamchamal village, leaving students without place to study
CHAMCHAMAL — A primary school in the village of Gurgae Kwekha Marf of Sulaymaniyah’s Chamchamal district, collapsed following days of severe winds and heavy rainfall, leaving 14 students without a place to study.
Shorsh Marouf, the village head, told 964media on Monday that the school, which consisted of two prefabricated cabins, was the only educational facility serving the area.
“Our school collapsed yesterday due to strong winds,” he said. “It was made up of two cabins and served as our only school.”
Marouf said the students are now at home, with no timetable for when or if the school will be rebuilt. “So far, no promise has been made to restore the school,” he said, adding that the local education office has only documented the damage without offering further assistance.
“We ask for urgent help to restore the school,” he said.
The collapse comes amid a wave of heavy storms affecting the Kurdistan Region and other parts of Iraq in recent days, including strong winds, rain, and dust.
