Three generations of craftsmanship: Sulaga family continues local legacy of metalwork

NINEVEH — In the district of Hamdaniya, the Sulaga family has built a reputation over generations for crafting water heaters, tanks, bread ovens, and restoring household appliances — a tradition rooted in trust, quality, and community service.

“Everyone in the villages and areas of Hamdaniya knows the Sulaga family for our work in manufacturing water heaters, tanks, traditional bread ovens, and repairing home appliances,” said Ghadeer Salem Sulaga, son of the founder of Salem Sulaga and Sons Industries. “We’ve always treated people kindly, and that helped us build good relationships with all communities in the district.”

The family trade began decades ago when Ghadeer’s grandfather started repairing heaters and lanterns. His father expanded into manufacturing doors, windows, and household essentials. Today, Ghadeer and his brothers run the workshop, producing items like 750- to 5,000-liter water tanks, livestock feeding basins, oil barrels, and even agricultural equipment.

“We use high-quality Russian steel in our products and offer warranties up to five years,” Ghadeer told 964media. “We still have customers using tanks they bought from us in 2006 and 2007.”

Though less expensive materials are available, the family prioritizes durability. “We offer options using Russian, Turkish, and Chinese steel, but we always prefer top-grade metals so the customer doesn’t face problems later,” he said.

For the Sulagas, the business is more than a source of income — it’s a legacy. “We live by my late grandfather’s principle: ‘Work with care and God will provide. Never cheat the customer, and God will open the doors of livelihood.’”

Now in its third generation, the family is determined to pass the craft to the next. “It’s a sustainable source of income and a secure future,” Ghadeer said. “We want the younger generation to know the value of this work and keep it alive.”
