Iraq was informed of Trump’s message to Iran, foreign ministry says
BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs says Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein was informed about a message from former U.S. President Donald Trump to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei during a phone call with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi.
“The Iranian minister also informed Mr. Fuad Hussein of the contents of a message from U.S. President Donald Trump addressed to the Iranian leadership,” the Iraqi Foreign Ministry said in a statement, adding that Iran would issue a formal response.
Hussein expressed concern over rising tensions in the region and welcomed being briefed on the message. “He appreciated the step of being informed about the content of President Trump’s message and affirmed his hope that the exchange of messages would contribute to opening channels of dialogue between the two sides,” the ministry said.
In early March, Trump was reported to have sent a letter to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei proposing negotiations for a new nuclear agreement. The message, delivered via the United Arab Emirates, warned of possible military consequences if Iran declined and set a two-month deadline for reaching a deal.
Khamenei dismissed the proposal as a “deception” and said Iran would not be pressured into talks. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmail Baghaei later said Iran would respond to the message after a full review.
