Vendors cite supply shortages

Kalar poultry market sees rise in chicken prices ahead of Ramadan

KALAR — Chicken prices in Kalar’s poultry market have increased compared to pre-Ramadan levels, with variations among different shops. The cost per kilogram has risen to around 3,500 IQD ($2.4), up from 2,750 IQD ($1.9) before Ramadan.

Sabah Mohammed, a poultry vendor at the market, told 964media, “A few days ago, we were selling a kilogram of chicken for around 2,750 IQD, but today the price has gone up to 3,500 IQD.”

He attributed the price increase to a shortage in supply, noting that chickens are being transported to southern Iraq, which has reduced availability in the Kurdistan Region. “Apart from the price increase, an additional 1,000 IQD ($0.7) is charged for cleaning each chicken,” Mohammed added.

It remains unclear whether prices will continue to rise in the coming days, although demand for chicken typically increases during Ramadan.

Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is observed by Muslims worldwide as a period of fasting from dawn to sunset. During this month, special meals are prepared for Iftar—the evening meal that breaks the fast—and Suhoor, the pre-dawn meal. Traditionally, Iftar begins with dates and water before a full meal, often featuring meat and chicken.
