Iraq braces for another week of freezing temperatures and snow
BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Meteorological Authority forecasts a weeklong bout of freezing weather will persist across several governorates, with rain and snowfall affecting parts of the country.
Northern regions will face overcast skies starting Monday, with light rain and snow likely in mountainous areas. Temperatures are expected to plunge sharply: Baghdad, Diyala and Salahaddin could dip to 0°C, while Kirkuk and Nineveh may reach -1°C. In the far north, Duhok is predicted to fall to -3°C, Erbil to -2°C, and Sulaymaniyah could be the coldest at -4°C.
Daytime highs will remain modest as well. Baghdad is forecast to reach only 8°C, with Duhok and Erbil climbing to just 4°C. Basra, however, might record a relatively warmer 15°C.
The cold conditions are expected to persist through Thursday. Tuesday may see clearer skies, but by evening, partly cloudy conditions could develop in both northern and southern areas. Although a slight temperature rise is anticipated midweek, freezing weather will likely continue, particularly in the northern governorates.
The Meteorological Authority has urged residents to take precautions, warning that freezing temperatures and snowfall could disrupt daily life in several parts of the country.
