Iraq braces for intense cold snap

BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Meteorological Organization has warned of an incoming polar cold snap that will bring heavy rain and snowfall across the country, with temperatures expected to drop sharply.

A weather report from the Department of Atmospheric Forecasting indicates that a strong cold air mass will sweep through Iraq, triggering rain showers and snow in elevated areas—particularly in the northern governorates. The cold wave is expected to peak Sunday night and early Monday, with temperatures plunging below freezing in several regions.

It follows a relatively mild winter so far in the north of Iraq and the Kurdistan Region.

The report also warns that western and northwestern winds will intensify the drop in temperature. By Saturday, forecasts call for subzero readings in urban centers and mountainous regions alike. In northern Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region, temperatures may range between -7°C and -2°C, while central and southern governorates are expected to see readings from -2°C to 2°C.

Citizens are advised to take precautions against the extreme cold and potential frost. “We recommend limiting outdoor activities, ensuring proper heating in homes, and taking extra care when traveling,” the statement read. Authorities have also urged farmers to protect crops and livestock from the freezing conditions.

The Iraqi Meteorological Organization will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as the cold wave progresses.
