Peshmerga ministry denies US assistance suspended
ERBIL — The Kurdistan Region’s Ministry of Peshmerga on Sunday denied reports that U.S. assistance to its forces has been suspended, describing circulating claims as “baseless.”
“Only assistance related to the fight against ISIS terrorists has been paused,” the ministry said, attributing the move to “the limited and reduced activities of ISIS terrorists.” Financial and logistical support organized under a set timetable will continue until the current agreement concludes in September 2026, with discussions on a new agreement expected in the coming period.
The ministry said support continues “in accordance with the joint understanding signed between the U.S. Department of War and the Ministry of Peshmerga,” aimed at advancing reforms and unifying Peshmerga forces.
The Islamic State emerged in 2014, capturing major cities including Mosul and Tikrit before being militarily defeated in Iraq by 2017 through the efforts of Iraqi forces, Kurdish Peshmerga and a U.S.-led coalition.
