Dust storm warning issued as low-pressure system moves in
BAGHDAD — Iraq’s Civil Defense Directorate on Sunday issued safety recommendations ahead of a dust storm expected to begin overnight, warning of reduced visibility and worsening conditions as a low-pressure system moves in from western regions.
The directorate advised residents to seal doors and windows tightly, use wet cloth barriers to block small openings and secure loose items on rooftops and balconies including satellite dishes and outdoor furniture.
Authorities recommended avoiding travel unless necessary. For those who must drive, the directorate advised reducing speed, maintaining safe distances and ensuring all vehicle lights are functioning. “In cases of zero visibility, drivers should leave the road while turning on hazard lights,” it said.
Residents were urged to wear masks outdoors, avoid rubbing their eyes if exposed to dust and use protective eyewear rather than contact lenses. Children, the elderly and people with respiratory conditions should remain indoors in well-ventilated areas, the directorate said.
